01 · Introduction

Georgian riverside and Arts and Crafts streets.

Chiswick is served by several District line stations, with Piccadilly line trains calling at Turnham Green early and late in the day, plus London Overground and South Western Railway services, and Heathrow is close by.

It has a strong stock of period property. Fine Georgian terraces line Chiswick Mall on the river; there are pretty two- and three-bedroom cottages at Strand-on-the-Green and on the Glebe Estate; and for substantial family houses buyers look to the Arts and Crafts streets of Bedford Park or the large detached 1920s and 1930s houses of Grove Park. The main shopping area is the broad Chiswick High Road and its offshoots, Devonshire Road and Turnham Green Terrace, with independent delis, restaurants and antiques dealers.

02 · Property market

Family houses in demand.

Our earlier guide reported that Chiswick outperformed the rest of prime outer London during the pandemic price boom. Despite a quieter market in 2024, demand for larger family houses remained strong: that year Red Lion House on Chiswick Mall changed hands for £4.25 million, and two houses on Addison Grove sold for £4.3 million and £3.75 million. Overall, flats were the most popular purchase.

Rightmove sold-price data for the 12 months to December 2024, quoted in our earlier guide, gave an average of £1,036,412, with flats averaging £552,529 and semi-detached houses just over £2 million. Average sold prices were around 8% lower than in the previous year.

Kensington House owns a one-bedroom flat in the historic Grove Park Gardens, shown in our portfolio below.

“Demand remains strong for larger family houses along the river and in Chiswick’s period streets.”

03 · Things to do

A Palladian villa, comedy and a book festival.

Chiswick House and Gardens provide a wonderful setting for walks and cultural events. The house is a Palladian villa regarded as one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century British architecture, and the gardens, designed by William Kent and dotted with statues and follies, are considered the birthplace of the English Landscape Movement. There is an excellent café in an award-winning modern building, and Giffords Circus has regularly brought its summer tour here.

The George IV on Chiswick High Road runs an events programme that punches above its weight, from jazz to stand-up; its function room, the Boston Room, saw early performances by Adele, Laura Marling and Florence + the Machine. Other highlights include the Chiswick Book Festival each autumn and the 96-seat Tabard Theatre, where Harry Hill, Dara Ó Briain and Al Murray have all played.

Recommendations carried forward from our earlier guide and rechecked in October 2026 where public sources allowed. Opening details change, so please confirm before visiting.

Food shops, Sunday markets and antiques.

Chiswick is something of a haven for food lovers, with superb independents along Turnham Green Terrace, including the delicatessen Hack & Veldt, Macken Brothers butchers, The Chiswick Fishmonger and chocolatier Philip Neal. The Chiswick Cheese Market, held monthly on a Sunday, brings around twenty stalls of artisan cheese from across Britain and Europe.

Other Sunday markets include Chiswick Flower Market, where award-winning growers mingle with new plant businesses, and the Chiswick Antiques and Vintage Market, full of architectural salvage, furniture, kitchenalia and French brocante. The rest of the month, The Old Cinema on Chiswick High Road offers antique, Art Deco and mid-century furniture, lighting and art across around 10,000 sq ft of showrooms, seven days a week. 05 · Pamper and exercise

A local health club and the riverside.

The long-established Hogarth Health Club is a much-loved local institution, with a pool, tennis and squash courts, a full class programme and a relaxed atmosphere; its Hogarth Medispa offers medical and beauty treatments.

Chiswick also has plenty of outdoor space for running, cycling and workouts. Paths along the Thames, some sections almost rural, are perfect for walking and running, while Chiswick Common and Gunnersbury Park offer more space. The riverside Duke’s Meadows has children’s play areas, tennis courts, golf and football pitches, surrounded by mature trees.

06 · Dine

A Michelin star and a Parisian-style terrace.

Residents gather for brunch or cocktails at Soho House’s High Road House. Its brasserie is open to all, with a Parisian-style terrace under pale blue awnings that is perfect for people-watching; upstairs are the members’ club and 14 bedrooms. Soho House

For a more formal evening, La Trompette on Devonshire Road is a Chiswick institution, holding a Michelin star since 2008 and in the 2026 guide, with polished French-inspired cooking, impeccable service and a magnificent wine list. Michelin Guide 2026

Families and those after a casual bite are well served along Chiswick High Road, and for a Sunday roast by the fire, head to a riverside pub such as the Bell & Crown, with its comfortable sofas and terrace over the water.
